TRUE STORY: It was February 2002, I think. At the time, I was working as a debt collector. The manager who showed me the ropes had just left the company where I was working. Several days later, I told him that no matter where he went, I would be loyal to him and join him wherever he’d go. The following week, my telephone rang, and it was the call that I had been waiting for. I left the office during my lunch hour to see what my potential new employer could offer me. WOW! An extra $200 per month! In 2002, with a CEGEP in Human Sciences, this was a lot of money! On returning to the office, my boss called me into his office. News of my visit to our competitors had got out, and it soon reached him. I accepted $100 more per month. And 3 months later, I left the company. I made the mistake of accepting a counter-offer. I like to think that I was young and innocent. Here is why you should refuse a counter-offer from your employer : 1. Even if you receive a counter-offer, your employer might doubt your loyalty to the company. You have opened a breach, you have dared to go and look elsewhere. This will certainly break the bond of trust that unites you and your present employer. Even if he tells you otherwise, you should doubt this. On average, a recruiter spends less  than ten seconds looking at a CV. Your task as a candidate is to capture that recruiter’s attention. Yes, I believe that “capture” is the right word. Your CV has to demonstrate what you can do, and at the same time it has to demonstrate that YOU are the best person for the job. Not the previous OR the next candidate. In the United States, according to my research, 10 million job applications led to 100,000 new hirings. This is a PERCENTAGE. Of these 100,000 new hirings, only 15% were the result of the related job posting. This statistic shows that it is much harder than you think to make yourself stand out during your job searches and attract the attention of a recruiter. The recruiter spends 80% of these 10 seconds checking the following: your last job to see if it was appropriate for the position, your education, and the start and end dates of your previous jobs to assess your stability. Once you have made it past this first stage, there are five favorite words that we love to see on a CV. Here they are, so take notes. Create. Feedback, is the art of growing your staff through constructive criticism, honest and committed. Our working World often works with encrypted measures, or no performance measures. In interviews conducted by Dr. Brené Brown’s team, the lack of feedback causes a lot of anxiety. Without feedback, it is impossible to grow your team. When you do not speak to your employees of their strengths and growth opportunities, they question their contribution and commitment of the manager to help them advance in their careers. There are 2 problems that come up: We are not comfortable with the difficult conversations; We do not know how to receive and give feedback in order to get things done. To learn, grow, and improve, you MUST be uncomfortable. That’s why we repeat over and over that all miracles are happening outside of your comfort zone. If you do not agree to be uncomfortable, you do not will progress as a manager, and your team will not progress either. Yes. All my childhood I was called “hardheaded”. I was criticized for disobeing. Today, at 37, is for me a compliment when I am told that I am stubborn. With the little wisdom I have gained through the years, I learned to choose my battles. There are all sorts of names for stubbornness. We talk about resilience, strength of character, some are also used to call it “having bad character”! I would like to explore with you how stubbornness can help you advance your career, slow you down, and how to take advantage of it during a job search process. The sales points! Have you ever received a job offer, in sales, because you were making great follow-ups? Demonstrating stubbornness as a form of persistence is in itself a good thing. Employers like people who do not give up. No matter the job or career you pursue people who don’t quit, who demonstrate stubbornness, resilience are always getting new opportunities easily. In your opinion, what percentage of workers are bullied in the workplace? The correct answer is 37%. More than one person in three will be the victim of a bully in the workplace. I thought I was the exception. Unfortunately, in my research I have found very few books on the subject. I found some articles in English, and a document on anti-bullying policies in Australia. I already had a discussion with labor standards on the subject. They explained that in Quebec, the psychological harassment law is brand new, it has only ten years.  It is difficult to find law cases since most of the time, the problems are settled before going to court. Stop being against bullying! Mother Teresa refused to participate in anti-war demonstrations. She always said “If you have an event that promotes peace, I’ll be there.” Why not approach your workplace in the same way? I prefer an open environment where the exchange of ideas, creativity and compassion are encouraged, to an environment that is against bullying. Remember that what you give your attention to grows. Understand me. Intimidation and harassment should be addressed accordingly. But, promoting a healthy work environment, open and collaborative is much more a productive environment than “ANTI – whatever you want”. There are a few weeks, the CEO of a recruitment firm asked what, in my opinion, that a person recruitment success. Very few people are studying in order to make external recruitment. The lost art of cold calling I stand corrected, not all calls are that cold. Keep in mind that at some point in your career, you will need to call and ask someone you don’t know to get something you don’t have. Maybe you should learn to master that skill now. The 1st call is always the hardest. The best way to get started is to structure your call in a simple and straight forward way. Introduce yourself. Explain the reason of your call.
